Hi there, I’m Sarah and I’m so excited about you being here. Before I go any further, I would like to acknowledge that being in Vancouver, we are located on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) one of the many groups of Coast Salish peoples)) Nations.
There's a lot that I want to accomplish through this company, even just within this blog.
By the spring of 2022 I hope to donate a percentage of my earnings here, quarterly to organizations that support things along the lines of;
B.C. based Indigenous organizations/ charities/ societies,
Ocean/ marine environmental causes in B.C./Canada,
Youth organizations/ programs
and supporting the local community in more ways. If I'm able to start this initiative sooner, I will, and update our website and everyone via our newsletter. My thought is to donate to a different organization every quarter and eventually take suggestions on different organizations any of you are particularly passionate about. I will be as transparent as possible with this process to unsure you know where your money is going.
As of now, when I collect glass for Water + Salt, I make a point to pick up everything I see that is not naturally occurring. I have been keeping most of the glass I find, in case I can find a way to use the teeny-tiny fragments for something down the line and the bigger pieces for something. Any glass I can’t keep, I recycle appropriately. Other objects I find along my beach walks, I dispose of, unless I find something like a button, I keep the buttons.
I’ve collected over 6,000 pieces of glass, and hundreds of pieces of garbage.
My intention with this blog is to be a space where we could have open discussions on topics related to the broader subject of what I'm doing here, what you are contributing to, as these topics affect us all, in some way and I want to make a community out of it. I also want this to be a place of fun and excitement. There’s so much I want to do, and I’m excited to get started.
With my earrings, each and every pair is one of a kind, in a literal sense. I couldn’t physically make two earrings or pair identical if I wanted to (I guess it’s possible through machinery or outsourcing, which wouldn’t be very serendipitous, so not very me). I can get close by matching a pair to be similar in shade, shape, size or wire wrapping, but that is all I have the power to influence. For some of the pairs I spend a lot of time sorting through the pieces of glass that are close to identical, or I try to wrap each earring in the same way, but I tend to do what moves or speaks to me first. Whether that means them being similar or making a point in matching them individually. That’s part of what I find so creative about this process, I like having options and not feeling confined on what I can create. There are times where making a pair that fit so well together, that look ‘right’ is nice, there's no doubt about it, there's something calming about the symmetry. But there's something I love, maybe even more, about the chaos of finding two pieces of glass, broken and weathered, that are just a little bit different, resulting in a pair that complement each other as much as they do the person wearing them.
I love every aspect of what I get to be doing here, the photography, collecting, writing, putting together orders, thinking of ways I could be doing more and that I don't take for granted. I feel so lucky to have found a way to do what I love all year around that I want to put effort into every week.
Thanks for reading and being here. My plan right now is to post on here every 3 weeks so stay tuned for more if that’s something you’re interested in! Subscribing to our newsletter is the easiest way to make sure you don't miss a thing, including when we are coming out with more earrings, collections, sales, and of course, blog posts!
Talk soon!
